Messe Düsseldorf

Facts & Figures…

Messe Düsseldorf GmbH
In January 1947, the trade fair company Messe Düsseldorf was founded under the name of “NOWEA GmbH” (Nordwestdeutsche Ausstellungsgesellschaft).

The city of Düsseldorf has a long-standing tradition of trade fairs and exhibitions. As early as in 1811, an industry and trade fair exhibition took place at the Government Chancellery. The most prominent visitor of that exhibition was the French Emperor Napoleon.

Messe Düsseldorf mainly focuses on exhibitions in the following areas: Machinery, plant, equipment, retail, trade, services, fashion, lifestyle, medicine, and health. In total, Messe Düsseldorf holds over 40 trade fairs per year, 23 of which are world leading trade fairs.

In the year 2007, Messe Düsseldorf welcomed more than 27,000 exhibiting companies and 1.4m visitors from all over the world. Turnover exceeded 350m Euros.

Messe Düsseldorf GmbH has made a name for itself as one of the world-leading organizers for international trade fairs. Thanks to a future-oriented expansion policy, Messe Düsseldorf GmbH is represented in most continents with a total of 12 subsidiaries. With currently 66 foreign representations, Messe Düsseldorf GmbH now covers over 100 nations.

Today’s trade fair area to a large extent covers the same area as in 1971 when it opened for the first time. In the following years further halls were built and the Congress Centrum Düsseldorf was extended. In 1993, the Düsseldorfer Stadthalle (convention hall) was erected there.

Step by step, the exhibition halls were renovated and new ones were built. Where once used to be the Stadionschwimmbad (stadium swimming pool), the new hall no. 6 was built – better known as “Rhein-Halle”. In the year 2004, hall no. 8 was built, covering an exhibition area of a total of over 13,450 sqm. Today, the former Europaplatz (Europe square) where hall no. 8 was built, now boosts several other halls. With this extension of space it became possible to host further exhibitions and significantly increase the size of the trade fair area. In addition, further renovations will be carried out at the south entrance of Messe Düsseldorf so as to release the pressure from the north entrance.

Since October 2007, the Messe Düsseldorf venue comprises of an incredible 306,900 sqm of exhibition area. Of this, the 19 halls erected there cover about 264,000 sqm, and about 42,900 sqm are open space. The halls are adjacent to each other and form a complete circle. To get from one hall to the next without losing too much time, the halls are connected with each other via enclosed corridors. For more ease, some of these corridors have been equipped with moving walkways.
